"Fashion and interiors inform and influence one another," said Karen Gentile, chairman of the Textile and Surface Design Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. "The prints that we are seeing now in fashion are carrying over into the home."

Some are retro, some are refined, some exotic, splashy or tailored.

"Fashion comes and goes, and so do style choices for the home," Miller said. "Many of these prints and patterns bring their history with them."

For example, the bold op-art Marimekko fabrics of the '70s are seeing a resurgence.

"They were playful and popular decades ago, but now they're back, and they're just as fresh today," Miller said. "Vera prints, too," she added, in reference to the colorful scarves of the era.

Chintz, also, is identified with a time and place.

"In the 1950s, living room draperies used to be done in floral chintz no matter what else was in the room, so it's a reflection of that time," Miller said. "But it was reinterpreted in the '80s and looked very fresh and up-to-date then."

Seasonal selections

Rather than being keyed to a decade, prints can be a reflection of the seasons.

"Nature themes, such as green ferns, leaves and bamboo, seem summery to me," says Leona Knobloch-Nelson, chairperson of the Interior Design Department at Mount Mary College and a partner at Knobloch Nelson Architects.

Along the same lines, tropical prints evoke a sense of summer, as do boldly contrasting stripes and anything nautical and navy.

Pastel florals evoke spring and nature themes, while gold, burgundy and brown tones make us think of autumn.

"Around the holidays, you'll see more traditional choices, like Victorian patterns or red and green plaids," Knobloch-Nelson said.
