The history of wallpaper will be explored in a unique exhibition displaying rare samples for the first time.
Paper Tapestry: The Origins of English Wallpaper and Its Use at the Spa Town of Epsom will be showing at Bourne Hall, in Spring Street, Ewell from August 14 to 25.
This free exhibition will display samples of original wallpapers rescued from period properties in Epsom before their re-development during the 1970s and 1980s.
Containing some unique designs, these paper tapestries have provided historians with the missing link in the process of evolution from textile hangings to modern wallpapers.
The samples illustrate the development of the ground-breaking design concept of wallpaper and its impact on the English upper and middle classes as they struggled to maintain their status in a rapidly changing society.
On August 15 and 21, there will also be children’s activities between 10am and 12pm.   Children will get to discover how the paper tapestry was designed and produced by designing their own piece and for younger members there will be colouring sheets made up from the Epsom Paper tapestry.
