They are three grandmas who want to put the squeeze on you.

And they will be kicking off Accordion Days in Chemainus Friday.

The Gypsy Belles, who performed at the event last year, are back and ready to take your song requests.

“We like to interact with the crowd and if someone has a song they want us to play, well we haven’t been stumped yet,” said Carol Jones, a band member. “We really have a wide range.”

The Gypsy Belles are unique, not because they can play songs from just about any genre, but because of their age.

“The crowds are not expecting to see three grandmothers on the stage playing the accordion,” said Jones, who is 66. “We enjoy ourselves so much. We dress up like gypsies or our interpretation of gypsies.

“We enjoyed ourselves so much last year. The people of Chemainus are so open and friendly,” Jones said. “We really enjoy pleasing people, if they are singing and dancing. We just really enjoy playing for the community.”

Based upon the success of last year’s Accordion Days, The Chemainus Valley Cultural Arts Society is expecting a big crowd this year.
