Get your August 2012 Desktop Calendar Wallpaper! This photo was taken at Lake Memphremagog. This hard-to-pronounce freshwater lake (mem-free- mey-gog) borders Quebec and Vermont, and supports several resort towns, including the location of this beach in Magog.
So how did we end up in Magog? Don and I went to northern Vermont and Canada in 2008 for a week long, fall foliage road trip that included research for a short story on Quebec wineries. While most of the better ones are in the Eastern Townships, the Magog area has a few vineyards, most producing hardy varieties that survive the region’s winters.
On this trip, we stayed almost exclusively at bed & breakfasts. Magog had more than 50 to choose from, although most had owners who spoke little English.  We chose Au Manoir de la rue Merry, mostly because it was within walking distance of the lake. We went down to the rocky shores and watched the sunset before heading into town for an uneventful dinner. The next day, we stopped at Abbaye de Saint-Benoit-du-Lac monastery to buy some homemade cheese before crossing the U.S./Canadian border.
