If your room is narrow and long, place the wallpaper on the furthest wall. The other three walls can be painted the same as the background. Is the room square? Consider putting wallpaper on one or two walls. You know, of course, many wallpapers come with a coordinating plain wallpaper. That way you can have a pattern on one wall and a tweed or linen weave (practically plain) that blends for the other walls. If you love a small pattern or a mini-print, this is available in a fabric-backed wallcovering. You can hang it today and, in the near future if you do not like it, you can strip or peel it off easily and put it in another room. Have extra rolls on hand.

I prefer the fabric-backed selections because they are so practical. They can be scrubbed and easily stripped. No reason to worry about being comfortable. There should be not more than three main colors in a room. The more colors, the busier the walls will appear. Look for one main color and a few small amounts of another color. It is not the size of the pattern; instead, the amount of colors will make the room busier.

We had a client who loved their new mural in the dining room. Shortly afterward, they were informed a new road would be built and they had to move. They were very upset until we told them the mural was fabric-backed. They were able to strip it off and hang it perfectly in their new home.

Q: I have a collection of framed prints and had thought they would be in the new foyer. However, my new foyer is too small. Most of the rooms cannot accommodate these. If I hang the prints upstairs, they won't be seen by many. Where should these go?
