Bartonville couple updates Cape Cod home, but keeps '70s styleAfter convincing his wife of five years to move to central Illinois from Florida in 1979, J.B. Bordner surprised her with a full-length orange suede coat lined with fur."It had a big fox collar. It must have weighed 20 pounds," said Bev Bordner while sitting in the kitchen of the Bartonville home where the couple has lived for 33 years."My father-in law didn't think I'd make it through the first winter," she said. They had moved in November, and J.B. was trying to make the transition easier for his wife, who didn't even own a winter coat. Bev had been lukewarm about the move north."We had a real nice house in Florida," said Bev. "One day he just decided he wanted to come home. He pulled the rug right out from under me. I thought my feet would be planted in Florida forever."When the pair were visiting J.B.'s family in Canton the summer before, J.B. had secretly put in applications at several businesses in the area."Before we got home, his Dad left us a message that Lonza wanted to talk to him," Bev said. After the move, the pair lived with J.B.'s parents for several months before they finally found a home they liked in Bartonville."We went everywhere, Peoria, Pekin, North Pekin - I didn't want to live in Canton. I'm used to the big city," Bev said.Built in the 1940s, the story and a half Cape Cod was the largest of the many houses they looked at."Everything was so small," Bev said. "This house was so big, when we looked at it, we said, 'how are we ever gonna fill it up?' But as you can see, over the 30-plus years we've lived here, we filled it up."The couple started making improvements right away. In keeping with the style of the 1970s, they put paneling on the walls and Z-BRICK on the backsplash in the kitchen."Everybody had to have Z-BRICK back then," said Bev.The very best aspects of 1970's style still remain in the Bordner house. Along with the Z-BRICK, the burnt orange velvet sectional sofa the Bordner's purchased soon after marrying provides great color in the living room. It showcases the organic slab of cypress J.B. made into a wonderful coffee table.
