As a descendant of farm women who made their own apple butter and everything, I firmly believe in America as a do-it-yourself nation.

On the other hand, I once had to report on a home handyman who pounded a nail through an electrical wire while paneling his den and burned his house down.

The stakes are high when you start messing around with things best left to experts, such as paneling and surgical bandages, but that does not deter the all-American DIYer.
We are the sons and daughters of pioneers who had to grow their own timber, build sawmills, cut down trees, plane boards and forge nails before they could put up paneling.
They never hit wiring while doing this, because wiring had not been invented, but every now and then, somebody probably knocked over an oil lamp. For in the old days, DIY talent was as thinly distributed in the population as it is now, probably.
Fortunately, the modern wealth of gadgets, supplies and free advice has veiled this mystery in a haze of overconfidence.
